The Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths along with the Peenya police busted a fake voters' ID scam and arrested five people. The suspects were involved in uploading the IDs on the Election Commission website illegally.

The arrested are C J Naveen Kumar (30), Sanjay Kumar (29), N Sachin (26), Devraj (25) and Karisiddeshwara (34).

Naveen and Sanjay were computer operators at the tahsildar's office in the north division, the police said.

After the completion of their contract, they started a cyber cafe in Bagalgunte and collected data about unregistered voters.

The suspects then procured the login ID and password of the Election Commission's website and uploaded the data of unregistered voters, the police said.

They generated voters' IDs using the updated electoral list and issued it to the citizens. They also collected between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 from each of them, the police said.

During the revision of the list, the Election Commission officials noticed illegal entries and approached the CCB police.

The police tracked down the suspects based on their IP address and arrested them. They are probing whether the accused have any political affiliations.
