'Gaja' effect: Two-days of rain expected in Bengaluru

Last Updated 18 July 2019, 08:28 IST

Amidst chill weather that has engulfed the city, Bengaluru and adjoining districts are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall on Thursday and Friday due to the cyclonic storm ‘Gaja’.

The cyclone Gaja, which has created a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to make landfall off Tamil Nadu coast on Thursday triggering heavy showers along the parts of East Coast especially in Tamil Nadu.

The effects of the cyclone, according to meteorologists from Bengaluru, can be witnessed in Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Kolar and Chikkaballapura in the form of light to moderate rainfall spread across two-days.

Acknowledging the influence of cyclonic storm on South Interior Karnataka, Dr GS Srinivasa Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC) said,

“Light to moderate amount of rainfall spanning two-days will lash over South Interior Karnataka. More than the Bengaluru city, the outskirts areas of Bengaluru Rural and adjoining districts like Kolar, Ramanagar, Chikkaballapur and Bengaluru Rural will witness the rainfall. The city will experience cloudy condition with sporadic drizzling at regular intervals,” Dr Reddy explained.

According to experts, the cyclonic condition is expected to bring in about 20-30 mm showers.

“The showers will be of no use as the crops in several of these areas have already perished and would benefit only a few. Had it been raining in north interior Karnataka, it would have been a much relief. Even though the coastal Karnataka is also expected to receive one or two spells of rains, there is hardly anything over North interior Karnataka,” Reddy revealed.

While the effect of ‘Gaja’ is likely to bring in showers for two-days, the cloudy and cool weather will continue over Bengaluru until the weekend, according to weather experts.
