Global seminar held on sustainable rural development

A three-day international seminar is being conducted in Bangalore University where geographers, students and practitioners will focus on ‘Geo-spatial solutions’ for sustainable rural development in the country.

Organised by Department of Geography, Bangalore University, along with The Deccan Geographical Society (DGSI), Department of Geography, Pune, the seminar, from September 20 to 22, will focus on finding solutions for agriculture-related programs.

Speaking to DH, Dr Ashok D Hanjagi, professor, department of geography, Bangalore University said, “The seminar will mainly focus on finding solutions for agriculture related problems. It is time for us to get these solutions in a technical way.

To assess the sustainable rural management there is a need to use and promote satellite data and innovative geo-spatial technologies. This will also help in beginning ‘Smart Agriculture’ in India.”

The satellite data is necessary for the scientists and agriculturalists to predict the climatic condition and practice agriculture accordingly.

It can also be used to identify water resource, soil fertility and crop monitoring.

“Our students are already conducting research to give technical solutions for agricultural problems in the remote areas of Bengaluru.

Besides agriculture there will also be discussions and paper presentations on all round rural development in the three day seminar by guests from across the country.

Few dignitaries have also come from Sri Lanka and Myanmar to present the adaption of satellite data for agriculture in their country,” he added.
