Noted environmentalist A N Yellappa Reddy has written to Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy against the decision to revive the steel flyover project in the city.

Reddy, who is also the chairman of Bangalore Environment Trust (BET), has emphasised on the environmental impact of the project on Bengaluru.

According to him, as the project involves utilisation of steel and will be insulated with rust proof paint, it will result in releasing particulate matter into the air, which may lead to air pollution.

“The city will soon be an ‘urban heat-island’ and there will be impending effects, such as an increase in the temperature due to loss of tree cover as the steel flyover requires felling of at least 812 trees in the city,” the letter stated.

“Embracing public transport and not to re-build roads would be the smartest move for the betterment of the city as well as citizens of Bengaluru,” Reddy has stated in the letter.
