The BJP and JD(S) on Friday welcomed the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to postpone the election to RR Nagar Assembly constituency, while the Congress said it had full confidence in the EC.

The election to the segment was deferred following the seizure of a large number of voter identity cards.

While the Opposition parties, the BJP and JD(S), charged that the ruling Congress was behind the malpractice, the Congress accused the BJP of trying to malign it during the elections.

“The BJP, afraid of losing, effectively employes its dirty trick department, using all immoral and unethical practices and is trying to malign the Congress party and its leaders,” KPCC vice president Radhakrishna said.

The Congress candidate in RR Nagar has unequivocally declared that he has nothing to do with the seizer.

The voter IDs were found in the house of Manjula Nanjamari, who is a BJP leader, he said.

BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje said this incident exposed the Congress.

People will teach the party a lesson in the elections. The ECI should step in to ensure free and fair elections, she added.

The JD(S) termed the ECI’s decision as a slap in the face of the Congress and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

“It is an open secret that the Congress government is missing the power and playing fraud. The returning officers in RR Nagar and Yeshwantpur constituencies had colluded with the Congress candidates,” the JD(S) spokesperson Ramesh Babu said.

The ECI should take action against these officers and ensure that free and fair elections are conducted in these constituencies, he added.
