Sichrem to submit list of demands

The demands include immediate ratification of the Convention against Torture without any reservations, and signing and ratification of the optional protocol to the convention against torture.

The other demands are the right not to be tortured to be made a Fundemenetal Right, and torture be made a distinct penal offence; a legislation which brings domestic violence within the definition of torture, bringing specific safeguards in protecting women, children, dalits and minorities set out in legislations, and strictly enforcing them through human rights institutions and court directions, among others. “We have documented 800 cases of torture in last two-and-a-half year in six districts. We have recorded 45 cases of torture in Bangalore and surrounding areas from January to June” said Manohar, Programme Director, SICHREM.
