Budget balancing

Last Updated 04 July 2009, 08:45 IST

News on the survey of pre-Budget. Though most of the suggestions are valid, both in intent and spirit, the toughest job for the Finance Ministry is in the next couple of days. Balancing act of the budget is the most challenging exercise with how to narrow the already brought forward huge fiscal deficit together with the current fiscal year’s anticipated deficit on account of granting various concessions and scrapping of unwanted taxes.

Whilst carrying out this balancing of budget, it is but natural to defer a few concessions or withdrawal of taxes and defer them to the next Budget session. Macro-level reforms on agricultural front as well as disinvestments, financial reforms et al merit top priority. Bridging the budget gap may not be the need of the hour but ‘narrowing the gap’ is certainly a must, in the overall interest of the country.
