The Last Supper: Weird requests on death row

Last Updated 03 May 2018, 04:57 IST

One of the hardest requests for the catering staff to deliver came from Odell Barnes Jr, hours before his execution. He had robbed, beaten and stabbed a woman to death in her home way back in 1989.

Unfortunately for Barnes Jr, and the entire world, prison officers had rejected his final request for a serving of justice, equality and world peace, 'The Daily Telegraph' online reported.

Another bizarre request came from Robert Buell who was sentenced to death for the murder and sexual assault of an 11- year-old in 1982. He insisted he was innocent, despite being sentenced to 121 years in prison for other rape charges. His last meal request was for a single black olive without seed.

Similarly, Thomas J Grasso, who was executed in 1995 for using Christmas tree lights to strangle an 85-year-old woman, had made a weird last meal request.

The menu: Two dozen steamed mussels, two dozen steamed clams, a Burger King double cheeseburger, six barbecued spare ribs, two large milkshakes, tin of SpaghettiOs with meatballs, half a pumpkin pie and strawberries and cream.

Unfortunately for him, the length or complexity of his list seemed to confuse kitchen staff who made one crucial mistake. His last words were: "I didn't get my SpaghettiOs, I got spaghetti. I want the press to know this."

SpaghettiOs is an American brand of canned spaghetti featuring circular pasta shapes in a cheese and tomato sauce - and marketed as "less messy" than regular spaghetti.
And, James Edward Smith who was executed in June 1990 for murder and robbery in Houston, had requested a lump of dirt for his last meal, allegedly so he could carry out a "voodoo" ritual.

His wish was not granted, however, as dirt was not included on the list of foods approved by the prison system. He settled for yogurt.
