Englishman Eric Harrison, a consultant to FIFA on football turf, visited the stadium on Tuesday and gave the foundation work the thumbs-up, thus paving the way for Greenfields to lay the artificial turf.

“Harrison was impressed with the foundation work,” said Karnataka State Football Association president AR Khaleel. “Now, only the turf-laying process is pending. Work on should start by February 17, and end in four weeks’ time.”

The artificial turf consignment is expected to reach Chennai on February 10. With custom officials expected to take a week for inspection, the turf should reach the City by February 17. The turf laying will take about three-four weeks, and following another inspection from Harrison in the fourth week of March, the stadium should be primed to host its first match.

Owing to the delay --  the stadium was expected to be ready by December 31 last year -- local club HASC were forced play their initial I-League matches away. Their first two home ties  were played last month at the Sree Kanteerava stadium.
