Praveen elected M'lore Mayor, Geetha Deputy

Corporators co-operation sought to make MCC a model corporation

At the elections held at MCC council hall, Geetha N Nayak also of BJP was elected as the Deputy Mayor.

Mysore Regional Commissioner M V Jayanthi was the election officer. The election procedure went on smoothly without any confusion or pandemonium. In fact, the post of Mayor was reserved for Scheduled Caste and Deputy Mayor was reserved for woman (general).

The Congress fielded Appi against Praveen though the party did not have sufficient members to get its candidate elected. When the members were asked to raise their hands 34 of them supported Praveen, who represents Derebail South ward, while Appi got the support of 21 corporators in the 60-member house.

All the Congress members and an independent member Mariamma Thomas supported the candidature of Appi. All the BJP members except one supported the candidature of Praveen. BJP corporator Harish and independent corporator Jyothi Jayaprakash stayed away from the meeting.

JD(S) corporator Abdul Azeez, CPI member Jayanthi Shetty and  independent corporator Harish remained neutral.

Mamatha Shenoy and Geetha N Nayak filed the nomination for the post of Deputy Mayor. Geetha Nayak secured 34 votes while Mamatha Shenoy managed to get 21 votes.

Geetha Nayak represents Mannagudda ward.

The term of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will end on February 27, 2012.

Speaking after congratulating the newly elected Mayor, former Mayor Shanker Bhat urged the mayor to complete all the pending works like footpath, drainage and bus stand in the city corporation limits.

Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde said, all the 60 wards should be developed.

The interior roads are in deplorable condition in all the wards, which needs to be repaired at the earliest.

The row over Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) should be solved to facilitate the poor to construct houses.

Mariamma Thomas said the newly elected Mayor should see that the agenda is discussed in the MCC meeting. There is a need for healthy discussion in the MCC meeting.

Jayanthi Shetty said urged the Mayor to distribute funds equally among the members.

Mayor’s wish

The newly elected Mayor Praveen said “I have a greater responsibility as a Mayor. With the support and the co operation of all the corporators and officials, let us make an effort to convert MCC as a model corporation in the entire country. Let us work unitedly to provide better services to the people.”

Deputy Mayor Geetha Nayak said “the post of deputy mayor is a honour the citizens of my ward who have chosen me as their corporator. I will discharge my  responsibility efficiently. Let us unitedly work for clean, green and progressive Mangalore.”

Praveen is the first time Corporator.

Though he has completed ITI, presently he is into catering business. He was also a state-level kabaddi player during his high school days and was a best raider. He has served as the Health Standing Committee member.

Geetha Nayak is also a first time corporator. Originally, she hails from Chikmagalur. However, she has been residing in Mannagudda for the last two decades. She has studied up to PUC.

Commissioner Dr K N Vijayprakash and others were present.
