Reservation for BBMP wards

Draft notification expected in two days
Last Updated 16 July 2009, 19:39 IST

This formula leaves a minimum of 36 seats for women corporators. While the distribution of wards to the reserved categories is being discussed in the political backrooms, the number of wards for each category has been finalised as per the Constitution. The calculation is based on the total population of the reserved categories in the city.  But the draft notification is expected to be out only in a few days’ time.

“The draft notification on the reservation of wards should be out in a few working days. The cabinet members, along with the Chief Minister, are discussing the matter as we speak. The only question is the paucity of time,” an official from the Urban Development Department told Deccan Herald. It is learnt that the Government is getting cabinet consensus on which wards will be reserved for what category.

The draft will be finalised only after suggestions and objections are received from the public. Till then, announcement of election dates will be kept pending.

As the final ward list has appeared in gazetted format with  boundaries earmarked under  BBMP jurisdiction, the Palike is still stuck with the old map with 100 wards as placed on its website. The map as shown on www.bmponline. org website has the names of the wards and corporators as on 2006!
