The District Legal Services Authority, in association with Department of Woman and Child Welfare had organised one-day legal aid camp in the city.

Principal Civil Judge R Sharada, who inaugurated the camp at S B Samudaya Bhavan  said it was necessary to create legal awareness among women who are being denied equality and empowerment. They should not hesitate to approach legal forum to get legal aid.

Comparing women of urban areas to their rural counterparts, she questioned if the women who are knowledgeable were subjected to atrocities daily, what about the condition of rural women as she was not all aware of legal knowledge. It is mandatory for women to have basic awareness on legal issues, she advised.

Regional Transport Officer Shobha said though women were said to be a respected lot, there was no safety for women, despite several laws to protect them. The status of women working in garment industries and labourers was pathetic, she noted.

Deputy Director, Department of Woman and Child Welfare Vimala, Judge Savitri and Red Cross Society Vice-President Meera Shivalingaiah were present.

Telling women not to be submissive, Superintendent of Police Koushalendra Kumar asked them to fight for their freedom from their homes. Rise in the incidents of recovery of unidentified bodies of women was an indication to this, he added.
