Deccan Express forays into logistics business

Last Updated 08 May 2009, 17:07 IST

It will initially have a fleet of three Airbus A310s and six smaller ATR aircraft. The Airbuses are capable of loading freight to the tune of 35 tonne and ATRs 4-5 tonne each.
The new venture aims to utilise the untapped potential of the domestic air cargo and express logistics market

It would use the brand name ‘Deccan 360’ on domestic and international routes, Gopinath said briefing reporters. Gopinath has invested $25 million in the venture.
He plans to divest equity stake in next three to four months to bring in an additional $30 million.

He said while FedEx was connecting 200 countries with India and BlueDart was linking 5-6 cities within the country, Deccan Express would touch upon scores of Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities over a period of time.  Deccan 360 would be the first Indian company to create a hub-and-spoke distribution model in the cargo industry and would ensure clock-work precision in its operations.

“The core of Deccan’s hub and spoke model is the state of the art hub being developed at Nagpur. Work has started on constructing this facility which will handle majority of the shipments moving on the Deccan 360 network”, he added.
