Sathya Sai Baba's condition showing improvement

Last Updated 10 April 2011, 10:43 IST

"Sri Sathya Sai Baba, who entered the 14th day of treatment in this hospital, has shown slight improvement in the functioning of the kidneys," a health bulletin issued this morning by the Director of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning here, said.

"However, he continues to be on intermittent slow hemodialysis and ventilatory support. His vital parameters of health are stable and satisfactory. The panel of doctors treating him is satisfied with the progress he is making," it said.

85-year-old Sathya Sai Baba was admitted to the super-speciality hospital on March 28 following problems related to heart and respiration.

Doctors treating him have said he was suffering from multi-organ dysfunction and that he was responding to the treatment.

Meanwhile, senior doctors deputed by the Andhra Pradesh government to attend on Sathya Sai Baba told reporters at Puttaparthi that his condition is stable and improving though it still continues to be critical.

The doctors said Sai Baba was suffering from jaundice which is being treated. We saw Baba in ICU today. His condition is stable. That means his pulse, blood pressure and other parameters are stable with minimum medication. He is on ventilatory support.

Ventilator is being continued as he is not in a position to breathe freely," Raviraj, Director of Medical Education of the state government, said.

Sai Baba was having mild temperature as there is infection in the body and antibiotics are given to address that, he said.

Raviraj said that since Sai Baba cannot take food through mouth, it is being supplied through a tube and if there is any additional requirement, it is given intravenously.

"Another important factor is his urine output. It is very less. Throughout yesterday, the urine output was 100 ml. But it is much better because there was no urine output earlier.

Dialysis is still required. Earlier, we were doing this through Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). Now, we are doing intermittent dialysis," Raviraj said.

He said blood reports are stable which meant that Sai Baba is responding to the treatment.

Replying to a question, Raviraj said it cannot be predicted when Sai Baba would recover fully.
