The doctors of H D Kote, Mysore and a team of experts from Hebbal College, Bangalore tried their best to save the jumbo.

But they were unsuccessful in their mission as the elephant succumbed to its injuries on Monday.

The forest watchers had spotted the elephant lying in the backwaters of Taraka Dam in H D Kote taluk, with the swollen limb. Soon, they informed their higher-ups who arranged for medical treatment.

Treatment

Dr Nagaraj and Dr Srinivas administered more than 20 bottles of IV fluids and also gave antibiotic tables to reduce the pain.

On Thursday last, the elephant was forcefully dragged to the shore and started treatment. On Sunday, the doctors removed more than three to four litres of pus from the injured spot by conducting surgery on the spot.

The experts from Bangalore had collected the blood and pus sample for the clinical examination.

They had planned to change the medicines depending upon the nature of wound.
Despite pain, the jumbo was taking foliage and sugarcane. The department had put up a temporary shelter on the spot to provide shade for the ailing elephant.

This morning, Dr Srinivas started treatment as usual. But the elephant died after sometime.

On the receipt of information, Assistant Conservator of Forests Chandrashekar, Range Forest Officer Santosh Nayak visited the spot.

The postmortem was conducted on the spot.
