JOIN USSpeaking on the occasion, Kannur and Calicut Universities former Vice-Chancellor Prof M Abdul Rahiman said it is the social responsibility of scientists and teachers to educate and create awareness among general public about various micro-issues pertaining to the environment.
“Even though we have come a long way from the crude caves in deep forests to sky scrapers in concrete jungles, we can’t really boast of being a step ahead in competing with nature. We have made some serious alterations in our natural surroundings so as to suit our basic requirements, and some of these alterations have backfired on us in a drastic manner,”he said.
The fact that all the species of flora and fauna, including humans, are dependent on each other, and the extinction of any one of these species can trigger a domino effect on the other species, which are directly or indirectly dependent on it.
University of Mysore professor of zoology Dr S N Hegde spoke on “the cradle of biodiversity —the genes.”
