'Ban on iron ore trucks on NH-13, 48 from July 27'

In-charge Deputy Commissioner Prabhakar Sharma, who is also the District Magistrate, stated in a press release that the ban will be imposed as per the Section 115 of Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and under rule 221a(5) of the  Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules 1989. The ban has been imposed in the wake of frequent instances of damage of roads due to plying of heavy vehicles during heavy rains in the district. Home Minister Dr V S Acharya also had directed officials to ban the movement of iron ore trucks on National Highways in the district at a meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on July 19.

The Udupi District Administration had already imposed ban on iron ore trucks movement on National Highway. Sharma stated in the release that the ban is being imposed in the public interest to protect the roads in the district. However, the trucks which carry essential goods are exempted from the ban order. Police department has been asked to erect sign boards on the National Highways in this regard, the release added.
