The collection titled Community and Culture, consists Subbanna’s articles written on various issues including Kannada literature, Kannada culture and theatre. Speaking after releasing the book at a function organised by Deshakala, a literary journal in Bangalore, he said Subbanna, whom he had known for 60 years, was a firm believer in the idea of decentralisation.

Critical traditionalist

The centre of his all activities was his village Heggodu in Sagar taluk. Intellectuals across the globe became part of his activities in the village. Unlike many, he, after his studies, went back to his village and started theatre and built an institution. Ananthamurthy called Subbanna a critical traditionalist. He was a critic of the tradition he was part of.  Social theorist Ashish Nandy delivered a lecture on ‘The untamed language of dissent’ on the occasion. Historian Ramachandra Guha spoke about the book.  Community and Culture has been published by Akshara Prakashana based in Heggodu. Each copy costs Rs 495.
