'Labour reforms not on legislature agenda'

Last Updated 25 May 2011, 19:04 IST

Addressing the gathering at the Jnana Jyothi Auditorium of Central College, after inaugurating a two-day national seminar on labour reforms, organised by the Sri Alampalli Venkataram Chair on Labour Research of the Bangalore University, Shankaramurthy said labour reforms in the country had not been taken up with right earnest, though for the last 60 years, people had been talking about them.

"People tried to bring in reforms through labour laws, but such reforms are buried inside law books. Such issues must be discussed in Parliament and Assemblies, which tragically is not happening," said Shankaramurthy. He, however, clarified that this did not imply that the State government was doing nothing for labourers' welfare. "By setting up the Alampalli Venkataram Chair, the government has shown its concern," said Shankaramurthy.

The Council Chairman noted that there should be a balance between the welfare of employees and employers.
