“Two rare macaws were stolen from their enclosures in the newly set up aviary park inside the zoo two days ago, apparently in connivance with those who are familiar with the place,” Nandankanan Zoo Director Sudarshan Panda told reporters on Tuesday.
The full-grown rare birds had been brought from Malaysia in 1998 in exchange of two white tigers, zoo sources said.
As it was impossible for outsiders to enter the enclosure, the involvement of insiders like temporary employees was suspected, Panda said, adding the zoo authorities had already lodged a complaint with the police.
