V Nagaraj (6) and his one-and-half-year-old sister Venkatalakshmi were playing in front of their house when an old cement pillar in front of their house broke into two and fell on the children.

Nagaraj and Venkatalakshmi died on the spot while their cousin, Rayappa (12) who was playing with them has been admitted to a local hospital, with injuries. He is stated to be out of danger.

Nagaraj, a second standard student at a government school at Nagarbhavi, told his mother Shobha, a domestic help, he did not want to go to school on Saturday as he wanted to play with his cousin.

He started playing with some toys with his sister and cousin sitting beneath an old pillar in front of his house. Venkatesh, the father of the deceased and a BBMP contract labourer, was busy washing clothes in the bathroom when the tragedy struck. Shobha was working at a house on 11th main Nagarabhavi when the incident took place.

In a poor of blood

“I was inside the house busy working. All of a sudden, I heard some noise. Soon, I heard my children screaming. I realised something was serious with them and rushed outside. I was shocked as both the children were lying in a pool of blood,” explained Venkatesh.

Venkatesh requested neighbours to fetch some water to his children and rushed to Nagarbhavi to bring his wife. However, the children were dead by the time they rushed back.

Nagaraj did not respond to the treatment while Venkatalakshmi consumed a little water before she died, added the police.

The couple had recently shifted to the house after vacating their house in Nagarabhavi 11th main.  As the bodies of the children were taken for the post mortem, the couple grieved inconsolably, and there was not a dry eye among the onlookers.
