In the first all-German Halle final since the Wimbledon warm-up event started 19 years ago, the pair slugged it out in an exciting first set before the 27-year-old Petzschner retired, trailing 7-6, 2-0.

World number 49 Kohlschreiber, who beat holder Lleyton Hewitt in the last eight and world number eight Gael Monfils in the semifinals, landed his first singles title since Auckland in 2008.

Kohlschreiber, who has slipped down the rankings after a mediocre start to the season, clinched the opening set when world number 71 Petzschner sank a slice backhand into the net.

Bopanna-Qureshi win

Top seeds Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi won their first ATP title of the season, overcoming Robin Haase and Milos Raonic 7-6 (8), 3-6, 11-9 in the doubles summit clash.
Sania Mirza rallied from behind to overcome the challenge of Renata Voracova in a gruelling three-setter to move into the second round of the WTA AEGON International qualifying event.

The seventh seed Indian faced stiff resistance from her Czech opponent but finally prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of qualifiers.
She next faces Georgia’s Anna Tatishvili, who beat Emily Webley-Smith 6-2, 6-4.
