Bank officials were coming out of the Mysore Bank ATM in Moddalapalya area after loading cash into the ATM when a motor cylce borne duo tried to grab the box they were holding, police said.
Though the culprits were unaware that it was an empty box, when security guard Chandramurthy went to the rescue of the bank staff members, the robbers chopped off the guard's right hand and fled with the box, police said.
Chandramurthy has been admitted to hospital.
