Unique Idiom

A celebrated piano-flute duo concert by ‘McGowan Duo’ (Netherlands) will be held on January 18, 7.30 pm at Alliance Francaise as a curtainraiser of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Bangalore School of Music.

The ‘McGowan Duo’ comprises husband and wife Ned McGowan and Keiko Shichijo. Their flute and piano recitals combine works by the great European masters with new music inspired by Indian classical music. Concentrating on the blending of their two instruments, they aim to show off the subtleties of colour and dynamics inherent in Western classical music.

Ned McGowan’s music strives for an idiom in which various music — American popular, European classical and avant-garde, Carnatic, proportionally intricate rhythms, the use of microtones in the search for new subtleties of melody —– rub against each other and generate new meanings.

Fortepiano specialist, as well as a pianist, Keiko Shichijo-McGowan performs at major festivals throughout Europe as well as in Japan. Since 2009, she has been an official accompanist at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

Music aficionados can listen to music by Debussy, Bartok, J S Bach and a very special composition as a tribute to Karnataka — Chamundi Hills at the event. Donation cards are available at Alliance Francaise and the Bangalore School of Music.
