BSY govt spent Rs 189 crore on roads to mutts, temples

To implement the road work, it flouted all rules of the Transparency in Public Procurement Act.

Sources said the Public Works Department (PWD) developed roads in and around the mutts, including Siddaganga, Rambhapuri and Muruga mutts,  on the directions from then chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and some officials in his office.

Yeddyurappa, known for his largesse to mutts and temples, distributed Rs 110 crore to the religious institutions from the Muzrai and Religious Endowment Department.

Development of ponds near the mutts was also undertaken. This apart, Rs 61 crore has been released for development of roads in and around Yediyur temple. The PWD entrusted the projects as piece jobs to select contractors, the sources said. The PWD should have called for tenders and awarded the projects to the lowest bidder, as stipulated in the Transparency Act, sources said.
