Addressing after inaugurating the Bearys Institute of Technology at Innoli near Boliyar on the outskirts of the City on Monday, Moily said that expansion, inclusion and excellence in education must go hand in hand. India has third place in the statistics of people who pursue higher education, while China and America stand on first and second places respectively.

However, it was because of the large number of population that India could bag the achievement, he added.

“Growth in the field of higher education should be recorded qualitatively. Nation should draw the benefits from population explosion through qualitative higher education,” he emphasised.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave special emphasis on higher education. India may be facing the problem of brain drain. But only India can be proud of being a nation which is rich in human resources, Moily said.

Home Minister Dr V S Acharya delivering the presidential address said that the state is a potential destination for professional courses. However, he said, “we still remain far behind with regard to economic infrastructure compared to developed countries.” State government had reserved R 9,000 crore for education sector for the current academic year, he added.

Dr Acharya said that though there are 160 engineering colleges which offer degree in Civil Engineering stream in India, none of the institutes could produce another Sir Visveswaraiah so far. Civil engineering should be given more emphasis, since the development of the nation depends mainly on development of buildings, roads, bridges, dams and other infrastructure, he added.

Sabeel-ur-Rasheed Arabic College rector Mufti Mohamed Ashraf Ali Saheb, former Higher Education Minister B A Moideen, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA U T Khader, VTU Bangalore Vice Chancellor Prof H P Kincha and Mangalore University vice chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa were present.
