City Police Commissioner B G Jyothiprakash Mirji told mediapersons on Saturday that it was the first time that his officers used the GPS to identify the taxi and its driver.

However, the commissioner, Additional Commissioner of Police  (Law & Order) Sunil Kumar and Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic & Safety) M A Saleem could not give a convincing reply as to how the technology helped crack the case.

Arjun Harinair (28) was killed on the spot when a KSTDC taxi (KA 50/2511) knocked him down on Ramana Maharshi Road near Gayatri Vihar Gate around 4 am on September 15. Arjun died due to multiple injuries.

The police arrested Dasharath Singh (49), a resident of Nagarbhavi, in connection with the accident and he admitted to having caused the accident. Saleem told Deccan Herald: “The police had collected a few plastic pieces from the accident spot and gathered details of all vehicles that had passed through the stretch on that particular day. Repeated efforts to match the pieces with vehicles helped them identify Singh’s taxi.”

He further said using GPS system in hit-and-run cases would become a regular feature. Besides, in such cases, the police will hold vehicle owners responsible if they are found hiding the truth, he added.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha is expected to visit the City on October 20 to appear before a court for a hearing. She has been given the Z Plus category security. However, the City police are yet to receive official communication from their TN counterparts.
