The victim has been identified as Hemalatha, wife of Mahadevappa, a former programme director of Doordarshan.

The police claim that the assailant/s had come with the intention of killing the woman and the multiple injuries and chopping of the hands were a clear indciator to this. They said the victim had offered resistance before she was murdered. The police ruled out that the woman was raped before being murdered. Not more than two people were involved in the crime, they added. Also, the accused knew the family as there was no forced entry into the house.

Police suspect that it was because of personal enemity and it had not been carried out for gain. However, husband said the family had no enemies.

The woman might have been murdered between 10 am and 12 noon. The murder came to light when son Sharath, who is a second PU student in Jain College, returned home. He was shocked to see his mother murdered and informed his relatives.

The family had moved from Girinagar to Ittamadu about seven months ago.

The couple’s second son Sudeep is second year engineering student.

Interestingly, neighbours were not aware of the crime till the police landed at the spot.

Neighbours informed the police that the deceased was reserved and never opened the door to strangers.

The police have formed two teams to crack the case.
