Last Updated 27 September 2011, 17:55 IST

Six months after the state assembly polls, Vijayakant has sewed up an understanding with the CPM, under which the latter has been allotted to contest the Coimbatore and Vellore Municipal Corporations, two of the ten Corporations for which mayors are to be elected directly.

Seat-sharing talks between the CPI and AIADMK also broke down this evening.  State CPI Secretary D Pandiyan said despite three rounds of talks with the ruling party representatives, a seat-sharing deal could be not be struck. The CPI has also now decided to negotiate with the DMDK as part of a third-front formation for the coming Panchayat and Municipal bodies elections.

The ruling AIADMK led by J Jayalalitha, clinched an understanding with four other smaller parties for the local bodies polls on Tuesday. Sources close to the AIADMK say that the assembly polls alliance could not be continued this time around also.
