Private firm to repair Datta cave

The roof had caved in one year ago. Binyas company has been entrusted with the work to implement at an estimated cost of Rs 2.9 crore.

The government’s approval letter has reached Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner R Narayanaswamy will convene an officials meet on the repair of the cave soon. The Government has earmarked Rs 13 lakh for the construction of roof, Rs 1.78 crore for protection and Rs 24 lakh for its reconstruction.

Government had earmarked Rs 1 crore for the repair of Datta peeta in the budget. The remaining money will be released soon. The work on repair will commence after September 15. Sources informed that the Datta cave will be open for public by 2010 uroos and Datta Jayanthi.

Background
The roof of the Datta peeta had caved in, in June 2008. A team led by Home Minister including four ministers had visited Bababudangiri and inspected the spot. In the meantime, opposition members alleged that government is postponing the repair works without any reason. Owing to the caving in of the roof, Datta paduke were kept in the district treasury.
