Reacting to a Deccan Herald report on UPCL, Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said the unit required the State government’s approval to commence commercial operation.

He said the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) chief was sent to the UPCL site and the clearance would be given based on the report.

However, the government had been making all efforts to ensure adequate supply of coal from Maharashtra West Coal Mine and the Mahanandi Coalfields, he said. Besides, 200 MW power has been purchased from Chhattisgarh to tackle the power crisis, he said. The Centre was also sought to supply adequate coal to the State. The State was entitled to 1,250 MW from the Central Power Grid, but there has been a deficiency of nearly 500 MW daily, he said. On October 14, the State representatives would meet the Union ministers concerned.
