Sampangi’s bail was cancelled on October 28 after the Special Lokayukta Judge N K Sudhindra Rao sent him to judicial custody, till the two main witnesses, H M Farooq and B P Arun Kumar, deposed before the court in a free and fair atmosphere.

The main witness and complainant Farooq had earlier filed an application seeking cancellation of Sampangi’s bail, claiming that he (Farooq) was being intimidated and that he feared for his life. As the two witnesses were finished with their testimonies and cross- examination on Monday, the judge granted bail to Sampangi.

Sampangi was directed to furnish a bond for Rs one lakh and a two sureties of Rs one lakh each. The first person who offered surety for Sampangi turned out to be a BMTC bus driver Jayaramaiah.

The judge set conditions on his bail stating that Sampangi should not  contact or allow his men to meddle with the witness or evidence. He was also told not to create a harmful atmosphere directly or indirectly and not to leave the country without prior permission of the court. The court asked him to surrender his passport to court within three days.

Sampangi was directed to attend all the hearings without fail. His bail will be revoked if any of the conditions are violated. The matter has been adjourned to November 15.

Sampangi was trapped by the Lokayukta police in January 2009 while allegedly accepting a bribe a Rs five lakh from Farooq, a businessman, at the Legislator’s Home.
