Using the tool, created by software company 3rd Planet, visitors can walk slowly through a region on the screen, stopping to look up and down at 3D monuments, or 'fly' over the area, stopping at points of interest.

An automated tool also allows users to pull up further information on each attraction such as opening times or historical detail.

In a manner similar to Google's Street View, users can pan and zoom the technology, as well as being able to navigate using the keyboard.

Nepal, the first destination to feature the technology, will showcase it with a new website feature called 'Journey to Everest', allowing travelers to experience both sights and sounds of several tourism locations found in the country en route to the famous mountain.

The site will launch on December 10, 3rd Planet confirmed, joining other virtual tourism efforts such as Las Vegas's augmented reality site and Google's new virtualization of the World Heritage-listed Bernina Express in Switzerland.
