5,170 litres of illicit liquor destroyed

Speaking to the media, Udupi District Excise Deputy Commissioner M K Somaiah said that 5,210 litres of spirit and 500 litres of Goa liquor worth Rs 3.55 lakhs were destroyed.

They also destroyed around 4,000 litres of spirit found in a hidden tanker boarded on a truck near the Kadekar river. The vehicle was seized as it was proven that the owner of the truck was aware of his truck being used for transportation of illicit liquor. The bid for the vehicle was postponed since the highest bid offered for the vehicle was Rs 2.5 lakhs as against the estimated cost of Rs 3 lakhs Somaiah said.

He informed that they had destroyed liquor worth Rs 3 lakhs at their Kundapura office premises last month and the same will be followed with the liquor recovered at Karkala office shortly. Excise DySP H Puttaswamy, Inspector Shubada C Nayak, Sub Inspectors Manjunatha, Devaraj, Ravindra and others were present.

Fire guts rubber sheets

An accidental fire which broke out in a room destroyed rubber sheets worth Rs one lakh at Somanthadka in Mundaje village of Belthangady taluk. The house belonged to Abbas.

Police arrested two persons and seized 6 kg ganja at Mukka check post on Tuesday.
According to police, the arrested are Hanumantha (24) and Raju (26). The accused were transporting ganja from Shikaripura in Shimoga to Mangalore.

Power theft

Mescom Vigilance Squad detected a power theft in two houses and imposed a fine of Rs 1.44 lakh at Jalsoor in Sullia taluk.

It was said that C P Mohammed of Kadikadka in Jalsoor had taken power connection without the permission of Mescom. A certain Ibrahim was indulging in power theft. The squad has disconnected the power supply to both the houses. The squad imposed a fine of Rs 95,000 to C P Mohammed and Rs 48,000 to Ibrahim.


12 held

Police arrested 12 persons for gambling at Ramkamal house at Kadri temple on Monday.
Acting on a tip off, police raided and seized Rs 5,65,815, 11 mobile phones and cards. The arrested are Yangeshwara alias Yaddu, Anwar (27), Praveen Kumar (44), Jagadhish Nayak (49), Ganesh K.S (35), Divakara (35), Achutha Bhat R, Honnaiah (56), Chitharanjan Shetty (52), Karnal D’ Souza (52), Raja Nayak (24) and Suresh Devadiga (48). A case has been registered.

Supervisor assaulted

A government official in the Social Welfare Department has been charged for assaulting his subordinate.

The supervisor of the Pre Metric Hostel M N Dharmappa, in a complaint written to the Department, alleged that he has been assaulted by the Taluk Social Welfare Officer Reddy Naik inside the office on Tuesday. Dharmappa, who undergone treatment at the Government Wenlock Hospital, has demanded action against Naik.
