“We are dead against allowing the foreign retail giants to set up shops in the country and will whole heartedly support the nation-wide shitdown,” Mayawati said here.

“The move will destroy local markets and deprive millions of people of their livelihood.”
She also demanded the immediate scrapping of the decision and warned that her party could “take some tough decision” if the Centre failed to oblige.

The shutdown is expected to have a good impact in Uttar Pradesh as the Samajwadi Party (SP) has also called for a similar “bundh” on Thursday.

SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has threatened to burn the foreign retail shops if they opened their stores in the country. Bharatiya Janata Party leader Uma Bharti had already issued a similar warning.
