Police later arrested the alleged abductor, Nayan Mohanto (21) near Yeshwanthpur railway station, minutes before he could board a train.

The victim’s father, Sikandar Ramprasad, a native of Bihar, was working as a welder at a construction site behind Sharada School, and was living in the same area. Mohanto, a daily wage labourer, was also working at the same site. He was known to Sikandar’s family.
Mohanto was in the habit of buying Rahul chocolates, and taking him for walks. On Sunday, Mohanto whisked away Rahul and demanded a ransom of Rs 1 lakh, the police said.

Immediately, the communication line was kept active with the help of the  jurisdictional police. The kidnapper called the family, and informed them to bring the cash near Hebbal flyover before Sunday evening, 4 pm. The cops traced the call to a public coin booth near Yeshwanthpur Railway Station, and managed to arrest Mohanto.

The same evening, Mohanto confessed to have strangled Rahul to death. Hours after kidnapping the child, Mohanto tied his hands and legs; in an attempt to silence him, he gagged him using a handkerchief. However, by the time he realised that it was going to be fatal, it was too late.

Later, he buried the body in a vacant site behind Nagawara Lake, and booked the train ticket to his native place.

Police said, the accused had recently watched a Bengali movie ‘Dada Thakur’, which inspired him to kidnap the child. Mohanto needed money for the wedding of his sister, scheduled for next month.

He had lost his job and was heading home; however, he wanted some money to take home with him.

Interestingly, Mohanto chose a wrong victim as Rahul’s family did not even have Rs 5000.
