<p>The mortal remains of former chief minister Sarekoppa Bangarappa were consigned to flames with all state honours here on Tuesday evening.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Bangarappa’s younger son Madhu Bangarappa lit the funeral pyre after performing the final rites at 7:15 pm. Bangarappa’s wife Shakuntala, eldest son Kumar Bangarappa, three daughters—Geetha, Sujatha and Anitha—son-in-law Shivarajkumar, grandchildren and many others were present at the cremation.<br /><br />The body of Bangarappa, who passed away in Bangalore on Monday, was brought here in procession at 3:30 pm from Kubatur, his birthplace, before it was taken to a land owned by him where it was cremated. The procession passed through Anavatti, Kuppagadde and Tavanandi before reaching here.<br /><br />Thousands of people paid their last respects to the departed soul. Supporters of Bangarappa raised slogans in praise of their beloved leader throughout the procession.<br /><br />Janata Dal (Secular) president and former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, MLA Zameer Ahmed and Bangarappa’s family were in the procession. The body of Bangarappa was kept for public viewing at Government PU College Ground till 6:45 pm. Later, the body was taken for cremation near the college.<br /><br />A pall of gloom descended on Shimoga district with shops, cinemas, government offices, private establishments and educational institutes at Sorab, Shikaripur and Sagar taluks remaining closed on Tuesday as a mark of respect to the former chief minister. The movement of buses was almost paralysed in various parts of the district. <br /><br />Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishveshvara Hegde Kageri and BJP state unit president K S Eshwarappa were among those who paid tributes to the departed soul.<br /><br />Noted writer Bargur Ramachandrappa, Congress leader Kagodu Thimmappa, JD(S) leader H D Revanna, former MP D K Taradevi Siddartha, Hampi Kannada University Vice-Chancellor A Murugendrappa, former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, Shimoga MP B Y Raghavendra, Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah, Congress leader Janardhana Poojary, KPCC president G Parameshwar, MLAs Satish Jarkihole, Hartala Halappa, Belur Gopalakrishna, former MLA Kariyanna, and district Congress Committee president K B Prasannakumar attended the cremation.<br /></p>
