These visuals will remain etched in the scattered memories of several residents of Shimoga. As many as 40 human foetuses were found among heaps of garbage in two different parts of the city on Friday morning.

Sources said nearly 20 foetuses were found in two sacks on Old Teerthahalli Road near Seethamma Ananthaiah community hall. Similarly, 20 to 25 foetuses were found in 20 plastic boxes in a drain opposite to Shankar Eye Hospital near Arakere on the outskirts of the city.

It is suspected that these foetuses may have been  thrown on Thursday night.
District Health and Family Welfare Officer Channabasappa said as many as 24 male and female foetuses were found. Some foetuses were found in plastic boxes containing labels.

It is yet to be ascertained if the foetuses were stored in boxes for research purposes or for other reasons.

The officer was hopeful that the forensic report will shed some light into it. Channabasappa added that the department would not hesitate to initiate action against the hospitals responsible for the dumping of foetuses.

Superintendent of Police Raman Gupta visited the areas.
