Cyclone weakens in Andhra Pradesh

Even though cyclone Thane spared the Andhra Pradesh coast and weakened into a low pressure area, the rains under its impact damaged crops in some coastal districts.

On Saturday, rains lashed and waves eroded the coast line of coastal Andhra Pradesh under the impact of the cyclone which hit the Tamil Nadu coast near Cuddalore on Friday. Coastal districts such as Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, West Godavari, Krishna, Prakasam and Guntur received heavy but sporadic rains since midnight, officials said.

According to preliminary reports rains damaged paddy, groundnut and mirch (chilli) crops, banana farms, fish and salt farms, adding to the woes of farmers. Salt farms over a large area in Bhavanapadu of Srikakulam district were damaged by the rains. In Prakasam district, there were reports of damage to chilli and groundnut crops.

The downpour inundated roads and affected the normal life in many parts of Visakhapatnam. Parts of Rayalaseema region were also receiving rains; the skies were cloudy and weather was chilly here and other parts of Telangana.The Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre has forecast rains in coastal Andhra Pradesh for next 48 hours under the impact of a low pressure area over north Kerala and its neighbourhood.

PC’s visit to Puducherry

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will ravaged villages in the union territory of Puducherry and Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu on Sunday.
  Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy told reporters that he would proceed to affected areas  immediately on arrival here at 11 am.
