Physically-challenged Nitin Maini may have been depressed over his in-laws’ proposal of having his wife married to his younger brother, according to his family.

“Nitin and Shweta had a love marriage and were extremely in love. However, after he met with an accident three years ago, following which he was paralysed, Shweta’s family began pressurising her to remarry,” said Nitin’s mother Sushma.

Sushma also said Shweta’s family wanted her to marry Nitin’s brother Rohit, who works as a radio cab driver.

“Nitin never told us about any argument with Shweta or his in-laws. But, the duo and Rohit were against the proposal. Shweta was also a devoted wife, who had been looking after Nitin for the past three years,” she added.

Sushma also highlighted that Shweta had recently spent around 10 days at her maternal home in Bhogal. She further said the entire family had celebrated the couple’s sixth wedding anniversary late on Thursday night.

“We celebrated the occasion by organising a small party and cutting a cake. Then Nitin, Shweta and Garv went to sleep in the room at 12:30 am. We were later woken up by the police, who came looking for Nitin. The incident has left all of us shocked,” Sushma said.

‘Money involved’

Shweta’s family claims that she may have been murdered over Rs 21 lakh that Nitin received from an insurance company after his accident.

“The money was deposited in a bank with Shweta and Garv as nominees. Nitin is also expected to get some more money,” said Shweta’s father Mahesh Verma. Nitin receives regular treatment at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in Vasant Kunj. However, the doctors say there is no scope of improvement in his condition.

“We are investigating the case,” a police official said.
