The government will make alternative arrangements for street vendors evicted from Gandhi Bazaar in Basavanagudi recently, Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda informed the Legislative Assembly on Monday.

Replying to question raised Opposition leader Siddaramaiah, Gowda said the government understood the plight of the families evicted by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), and that it would take a decision on making alternative arrangements for the affected vendors after discussions with the BBMP, he said.

Street vendors occupying pedestrian space had led to traffic congestion in the area. However, the rights of the vendors will be protected, he said.

Siddaramaiah urged the chief minister to allow vendors to continue business in Gandhi Bazaar temporarily till alternative arrangements are made. He said vendors had been selling fruits, vegetables and flowers at affordable prices for the last 50 years.

The BBMP had evicted more than 250 vendors without issuing notices to them, he said. Gowda did not respond to his request.

Action against SI
The government said it would initiate action against police sub-inspector Gurusiddappa for slapping woman bus conductor K M Shailaja.

Replying to a question by leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Motamma, Home Minister Ashoka said a case had been registered against Gurusiddappa at the Vijayanagar police station under the Atrocities Against Women Act.
