An executive engineer, employed at Municipal Corporation of Delhi was attacked by two bike-borne assailants at Indira Gandhi Stadium bus stop in central Delhi on Tuesday night, police said.

The victim’s family suspects hands of a land mafia behind the attack. Ansar Alam, 50, was waiting for a bus when two masked persons attacked him with hockey sticks.

Alam sustained severe injuries on his head and legs, police said. Ansar is admitted in the intensive care unit of Sanjeevani Hospital in Daryaganj. His family has alleged that the assailants intended to kill him. They fled after Ansar had fallen unconscious on the ground assuming him to be dead.

The victim’s brother-in-law Shams Tabrej said, “After finishing his work on Tuesday, Ansar took a bus from Daryaganj and de-boarded at a bus stop around 7:30 pm. While he was waiting for a another bus for Jamia Nagar, somebody hit on his head with a stick.

“He turned to find that two persons wearing helmets stood behind him holding hockey sticks in their hands. They started thrashing him with the sticks.”

Tabrej also added that he shouted for help but nobody came forward. The assailants repeatedly hit him on his head. After he fell unconscious on the ground, they fled assuming him to be dead. But after some time, he gained consciousness and stopped an auto for going to Sanjeevani Hospital.

Meanwhile, he informed his elder brother Afsar Alam, who informed police about the incident, Tabrej further added. Police said prima facie seems that the attack was made out of personal enmity.

“It was not a robbery attempt. The victim in his statement said there were two assailants who had attacked him with hockey sticks. As they were wearing helmet, he could not see his face.

“Alam said he is completely clueless about who could be behind the attack. He also denied having any enmity with anybody,” said Devesh Chandra Srivastva, Additional Commissioner of Police, (central).

Investigations were initiated to identify and nab the assailants. Alam stays at Abul Fazal Enclave of Jamia Nagar in south east Delhi and is posted at City Zone in Daryaganj.
