A 48-year-old man died after he accidentally fell on the tracks of Sultanpur Metro station in south Delhi and suffered severe head injuries on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Jeevant Singh Negi, a resident of Aaya Nagar and who worked as a lower division clerk in the Union Agriculture Ministry.

Jeevant was waiting with a relative, Kulwant Singh to board a train when the incident took place round 5 pm.

“Suddenly, Jeevant encountered fits and fell on the track. Though an incoming train was stopped on time, he suffered severe injuries as fell from about 3 feet height,” said Bhairon Singh Gurjar, additional deputy commissioner of police (railways).

Kulwant along with co-passengers and Metro staff immediately rescued him.

“They rushed him to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre. But, after being treated for about half an hour, he was declared dead by the hospital authorities,” Gurjar added.

Kulwant confirmed his brother-in-law, Jeevant, used to encounter fits on a regular basis.
A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson confirmed the occurrence of the incident at the station.

“A train towards Huda City Centre was coming on the Yellow line at that time. Our services were disrupted for about 10 minutes when the train put emergency brakes to save the man,” the spokesperson said.

Following the standard procedure, the station controller gave first-aid to Jeevant before taking him to hospital.

The police have taken Kulwant’s statement and are investigating the incident by analysing the CCTV footage available at the station.

“A case has been registered under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc) at Qutub Minar (Metro) police station,” a senior official said.
