Haunting Melodies

After almost a two-hour delay, the concert began for a select audience at Kyra. This being their fifth performance in the City, Randolph, of rock band Pentagram fame, said that people out here have music genetically imbibed in them. “This is the rock city after all. So every time we perform here, we make sure, we pump in some extra guitars and give it our best,” he adds. The band saw its origins almost three years ago, “I met Monica about three years ago in Mumbai and we started talking about music and philosophy and soon we realised that we shared many things in common. And before we knew it, we were writing music, performing in concerts and bringing out albums,” said Randolph.
Vocalist Monika Dogra, who calls herself Shaa’ir, which means poet in Urdu, put on an energetic show. With  guitarist Randolph and an excellent drummer; the hour-long act made for a good performance. It started with songs like Selling our souls, Lord inside, Swirl, Hit, Together again, Do it again and Oops which mainly spoke about love, peace and all those good things that people seemed to have forgotten. Songs like Freedom and Government had a hint of political philosophy to them. Just two albums old, the band is soon going to come out with a third untitled album. Goodbye cruel world, Freeze you and Love love love gave the audience a glimpse of what they can look forward to in their upcoming album.
The response for the entire performance was really energetic. With most of the crowd being hard-core rock fans they couldn’t help but headbang to many of the numbers. “For a long time, musicians took the Indian audience for granted and were afraid to think out of the box, but they are far more intelligent than we think they are. It also feels great that a lot of people actually understand what we are trying to say,” concludes Randolph.
