A 16-year-old class X student committed suicide at his home in Mansarovar Park in north-east Delhi after being reprimanded by his mother for not studying for his ongoing board examination, police said.

Avikant Singh, a student of Arwachin Public School in Vivek Vihar, was found hanging by a rope tied to the ceiling fan on Friday evening. Police have not recovered any suicide note from the spot.

“Avikant was supposed to appear for his Science exam on Saturday. Instead of studying, he was spending his time by playing on Friday. His mother Madhu scolded him for wasting time and forced him to sit with books,” a police official said.

After some time, she went to a nearby market. When she returned home, she knocked on the door of Avikant’s room, but he did not respond.

“She then peeped in through a window to find her son hanging with the fan. She immediately informed her husband Ramakant about the incident and raised an alarm,” the official added.

The 16-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

“His body has been handed over to the family after a post-mortem,” the official said.

Avikant is survived by his parents and a younger brother.  His father, Ramakant, is employed as branch manager of Hyundai Company in Ghaziabad.
