A cluster of two dozen odd hutments at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Nagar slums were buried under the debris of rocks and mud, when a portion of the adjacent hillside caved in due to incessant downpour, police and fire brigade officials said here on Friday. Rescue workers and volunteers struggled throughout the night in the rains to pull out survivors from the debris and could save many slum dwellers who were trapped underneath. Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Naseem Khan, under whose constituency the affected site falls, personally supervised the rescue and relief operations throughout the night. Ten fire engines and eight ambulances were engaged in the rescue efforts, which were hampered by heavy rains.
