Last Updated 13 May 2009, 18:28 IST

The turnout in the final phase was the highest in comparison with the earlier four phases. The turnout in the earlier phases was between 46 and 48 per cent.

The Pilibhit constituency, where BJP nominee Varun Gandhi was in the fray, recorded around 64 per cent polling, according to official sources. Meanwhile, the Rampur constituency  from where SP candidate Jayaprada is contesting recorded about 50 per cent polling.

Election boycott

At some places voters boycotted polling protesting non-fulfilment of their long-pending demands. Over 1,500 voters of Dhavlivala village in the Moradabad constituency did not cast their votes, demanding a separate gram panchayat.

Official dies

A report from Pilibhit said a polling official Babu Ram Maurya died following a heart attack at the Narosa polling booth in the Bisalpur Assembly segment.

One person was arrested after he damaged an electronic voting machine at a booth in Bijnore seat.

In the Rampur Lok Sabha constituency, voters boycotted the polling and held demonstration after about 3,000 names were found to be missing from the electoral rolls.

The final phase of polling would decide the fate of 203 candidates, including Varun Gandhi, Union Minister Jitin Prasada, former cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin, Maneka Gandhi, cinestar and Samajwadi Party candidate Jayaprada and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
