Twenty-eight-year old software engineer P R Sharath was declared brain-dead at the Columbia Asia Hospital after he met with an accident outside Bangalore recently.

His organs including corneas, kidneys, liver and heart valves were donated and transplanted into six recipients in the City. The transplantation was executed with the intervention of ZCCK (Zonal Coordination Committee for transplantation in Karnataka).

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Sharath’s brother-in-law Manjunath said that if Sharath had worn his seat belt, he would have survived the accident.

“It is very unfortunate that Sharath forgot to wear his seat belt after he resumed driving on the highway after a break.  His wife, however, survived the accident as she had worn her seat belt. I appeal to violators of traffic rules to have road sense while driving,” he added.

Sharath’s family was aware about the organ donation and gave consent for transplantation. Manjunath said that it is better that one gave life to others than to be buried or burnt.
