Math, English 'scare' UP students

Skip papers, leave answer sheets blank

English and Mathematics continue to haunt class 10 students of Uttar Pradesh Board, with a whopping four lakh students remaining absent in the two papers, according to education department sources.

Board officials say at least 80,000 students have not written a single word in their answer sheets in English and Mathematics papers.

“These students will certainly fail. They will have to give the test again next year,”  said an official.

According to education board officials, a large number of students also left their Science paper’s answer sheets completely blank.

“We are concerned. The number of students leaving the exams is large,” said the official. The total number of students either absent in exams or leaving their answer sheets blank comprises 15 per cent of the entire high school students in UP.

At least 37.40 lakh students had registered themselves this year for the high school examination of UP board.

“Such a large number of students shying away from exams is a serious setback to the efforts of the UP education department. We tried to keep the success rate at 90 per cent, which is not happening. Some 15 per cent have failed even before the results are out,” the official said.

According to education department officials, most students who leave the exam hall without attempting the paper are those who turned up with an intention to cheat using outside help.
“But when they encounter tough invigilators, they preferred to skip the test and avoid being caught,” said an official.

Gangs in UP, which become active during exam season by providing cheating material to students in return for payment, charge more for helping in English and Mathematics.
