A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his brother-in-law in Bawana area of outer Delhi over suspicion that he was having an extramarital affair with his wife, police said on Sunday.

Dinesh Dass, who hails from Lucknow district in Uttar Pradesh, had slit Sambhu’s throat on April 9 and dumped his body in an open field in Bawana Sector 2.

“Sustained interrogation had revealed that Dinesh since his marriage with Poonam in 2007 was suspicious of her character. He also believed that she was having an extra-marital relation with Shambhu, which created a strong motive for taking revenge,” said B S Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of police (outer).

“Investigation is going on to connect accused with the crime by way of direct evidence as well as circumstantial evidence with the help of forensic science laboratory authorities,” he added.

Absconding

The suspicion fell on Dinesh as he was absconding since the day of the incident. His location was later traced in Anora village near Lucknow, and accordingly, a police team was sent to nab him.

“He was arrested on a tip-off from near near Old Delhi Railway Station when he came back to the capital after getting suspicious about our team’s movement,” Jaiswal added.

Dinesh told police that on April 8, he had called Sambhu to Bawana market and and goaded him to accompany him to the open field to consume liquor. He was also carrying a kitchen knife and a packet of chilli powder.

“At the field, he made Shambhu to drink liquor and excused to attend a natural call to come back prepared with both of his hands laced with chilli powder. He rubbed it on Shambhu’s eyes which made him helpless and suddenly took out the knife and slit his throat,” Jaiswal said.

A case has been registered at Bawana police station and Dinesh has been charged under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code.
